Adverbs of Mode or Manner

The adverbios de modo, de manera o modales (adverbs of mode or manner) indicate how or in which way a task is carried out. In order to identify this type of adverbs in a sentence, we need to ask the verb the question “how?” as in “how/what way is the action happening?”

1. Bien (good/well/correctly), mal (bad/wrong/wrongly), regular (so-so) – these adverbs indicate that something is done rightly or wrongly, in a good or bad way, or somewhere in between.

No sé por qué he suspendido el examen si respondí todas las preguntas bien. I don’t know why I failed the test since I answered all the questions correctly. Seguro que te has portado mal y por eso papá te ha castigado. I am sure you have misbehaved and that’s why dad has grounded you. - ¿Cómo te encuentras de la gripe, Paco? - Regular, aun no me he curado del todo. - How are you dealing with that cold, Paco? - So-so, I still feel a bit sick.

2. Mejor (better), peor (worse) – these adverbs indicate a better or worse state.

Mejor cállate antes de que te metas en problemas. You’d better be quiet before you get in trouble. Creo que las medicinas que le han dado a mi madre no están funcionando porque ella se siente peor cada día. I think the medicines they have given my mother aren’t working because she’s feeling worse every day.

3. Deprisa (quick), rápido (fast), despacio (slow/slowly), lento (slow/slowly) – indicate a motion or movement done at a certain pace.

¿Tu hijo ya tiene quince años? ¡Hay que ver lo deprisa que pasa el tiempo! Your son is already fifteen? I can’t believe how quick time goes by! Las gacelas corren rápido. Nunca atraparías una a pie. Gazelles run fast. You would never catch one on foot. Vas cargado con mucho peso. Camina despacio o te puedes hacer daño. You are carrying a lot of weight. Walk slowly or you could hurt yourself. La mejor forma de hacer salsa de tomate es cocinando los tomates a fuego lento. The best way to make tomato sauce is by cooking the tomatoes in low heat.

4. Así (like this/that, this way), como/igual (like, same (as)), cual (the exact way) – indicate something is done a certain way or the same way as something else.

Si sujetas el taladro así, el agujero será grande y el cuadro quedará torcido. If you hold the drill like that, the hole will be too big and the picture will be crocked. Hice la tortilla de patatas como me dijo mi madre pero no me salió igual. I made the potato omelet like my mother told me but it wasn’t the same. ¡Créeme, te lo estoy contando cual me lo contaron a mí! Believe me, I am telling you the exact way they told me.

5. Según (depending on), conforme (just as) – these adverbs are used when there’s a condition to do something else.

Iremos a la fiesta según a la hora que volvamos de la playa. We’ll go to the party depending on the time we get back from the beach. El general siguió las órdenes conforme se le ordenó. The general followed the instructions as directed.

6. The majority of adverbs ending in –mente are adverbios de modo: fuertemente, débilmente, felizmente, tristemente, deliberadamente, completamente, cómodamente, amablemente…

Al final de la película, el caballero rescató a la princesa y vivieron felizmente el resto de sus vidas. At the end of the movie, the knight rescued the princess and lived happily for the rest of their lives. Le pedí amablemente el coche a mi hermano pero aun así no me lo prestó. I kindly asked my brother to lend me his car but even still he didn’t let me borrow it.
