As we saw in last week's episode, the Spanish articles are used to emphasize certain words in a sentence. The definite article and the neutral article "lo" also have that function.
1.- With exclamatory and suspension intonation, the neutral article lo is used in statements of emphatic intent:
¡Lo grande que es esta casa!
¡Lo listas que son estas niñas!
The neutral article can also be used in front of adverbs with the same emphatic intent:
¡Lo bien que canta!
What a great singing skills he has!
¡Lo lejos que vive Toni!
How far does Toni live!
2.- The neutral article has an emphatic value in colloquial expressions introduced by the verbs ser / estar + the preposition de and a superlative comparative adjective (más+adjective):
¡Es de lo más tonto!
He's so stupid!
¡Está de lo más insoportable!
He's being very abnoxius!
3.- The definite articles are also used in statements of emphatic intent:
¡Hay que ver el calor que hace!
Hace mucho calor.
It is way too hot!
¡No te imaginas la gente que había!
Había mucha gente.
There were too many people!
4.- By the elision of the quantifier, the definite article la forms an intensifying phrase together with the preposition de in exclamatory sentences with suspended intonation:
¡La de nieve que cayó ayer!
We had a lot of snow yesterday!
¡Con la de fuerza que tuvo que darle para romperlo!
He must have hit it really hard to break it!
