Besides narrating habitual and ongoing actions in the past, the imperfect is also used a) to describe people, animals, weather, things, places, situations, sensations, feelings, emotions, moods, states of mind, events, scenes, attitudes, convictions, etc. in the past as well as b) to tell the time and state the age in the past.
a) La casa tenía cinco habitaciones.
The house had five rooms.
*Había cinco policías en la entrada del edificio.
There were five police officers in the entrance of the building.
La mujer llevaba zapatos de piel de cocodrilo.
The woman was wearing cocodrile skin shoes.
En esta foto yo tenía catorce años.
In this photo I was fourteen years old.
La habitación olía a humo.
The room smelled of smoke.
El calor era insoportable.
The heat was unbearable.
Sentían un profundo amor por sus hijos.
They felt a deep love for their children.
Aquellas personas parecían de otro planeta.
Those people looked from another planet.
b)Eran las dos de la madrugada y no sabía dónde ir.
It was two in the morning and I didn’t know where to go.
Cuando tenía ocho años, me gustaba bailar como Michael Jackson.
When I was eight years old, I liked to dance like Michael Jackson.

*The imperfect of the verb haber is había.
Había un ruido infernal en la casa.
There was an infernal noise in the house.
Había muchos restaurantes en la ciudad.
There were a lot of restaurants in the city.
Notice that había is used both with singular and plural nouns. The use of habían is incorrect.
Habían muchas personas en la calle. Incorrect!
Había muchas personas en la calle. Correct!
There were a lot of people in the street.
